Reason for cosplaying: It’s kind of hard to watch FLCL and NOT instantly be a fan of a character like Haruko. She’s a vespa-riding, guitar-wielding, crazy BAMF. I was going to my first convention ever (AWA ‘04), I knew I wanted to cosplay, and I wanted to pick a character who would make me look “cool” but didn’t have a complicated costume. My mom helped me sew it because it was my first costume (and that’s just what mothers do), and I was SO proud. On a whim, my friend Velvy convinced me to enter the costume contest with her, and I even stated with honesty on the form that my mom had done most of the sewing. Nevertheless, I think the judges were enchanted with my “happy, excited newb” personality, and gave me Best Lookalike out of kindness (because let’s be honest… my costume was pretty lackluster and inaccurate!)
